This match had replaced the cancelled Hayling Island competition called off due to bad weather. 68 anglers booked-in for the match which was fished in zero-degree temperatures warming to 3 degrees by the end of the night. Aware of that ISAC divided the match into three zones from the Beach Huts near the Lifeboat Station peg 1 up to Alver Wall peg 46 with an additional zone placed on the most productive part of Browndown from the fence peg 47 with peg 69 located just past the concrete mushroom. 52 entrants landed a total of 156 fish on the night represented by 6 flounder, 6 Pout, 23 Rockling, 120 Top-Ups and 1 Whiting for a total weight of 16lb 15oz 12dms, 7.703kg. ISAC 2008 SOUTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE - ROUND 9 ISAC held the 9th round of the Southern Premier League from 7pm until midnight on Saturday 4th October 2008 at the back-up venue of Friars Cliff, Christchurch. The venue had been switched from Southbourne due to the poor weather forecast, SW 6-8 gusting 9. We had fished at Friars Cliff in similar conditions in the past with great success so it was no surprise to see 56 anglers turning up for the challenge despite the conditions. All seemed happy with the state of the beach and sea at this shallow shingle sand venue prior to the start of the match. Once the competition had got under way Hurricane Gustav turned up and it quickly became evident that the tide and wind were working against each other and with driving horizontal rain pushing lines into the water collecting rafts of weed washed ashore by the conditions ISAC had no option but to abandon the match just 1 hour and 5 minutes into the competition. Because we were unable to complete the match in the advertised time ISAC declared the match void and awarded all entrants 5 points. There £15 entry fee was carried forward to the next round. INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP NIGEL THORNS from Lancing retained his lead at the top of the table on 53 points and 28lb 13oz 4dms, 13.076kg in weight. STEVE DEATHE from Southampton moved up into second place overall on 58 points and 43lb 6oz 4dms, 19.681kg in weight. ISAC 2008 SOUTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE - ROUND 8 Every now and then you get a match that can only be described as fabulous. That was the case when 56 anglers booked in for the Round 8 competition of the Southern Premier League fished from 8pm until 1am overnight of Saturday 13th September at Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex. ISAC 2008 SOUTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE - ROUND 7 ISAC hosted the 7th Round of the Southern Premier League at Bracklesham, West Sussex overnight of Saturday 19th July from 8pm until 1am over a 4.8m high tide set at 1am. Weather conditions were again ideal for the 70 anglers that booked in for the match, all looking forward to big Smoothhound being landed. The venue was pegged in 3 zones between the wooden groynes in front of Sussex Beach Holiday Village with peg 1, placed towards Selsey Bill. On the very morning of the match ISAC received an updated Smoothhound 'measure to weight' chart provided by Shark Trust member STEVE HARDER from Southampton, a double SPL Individual Champion. The revised and updated list for 2008 was used during the match. 59 entrants landed a total of 286 fish represented by 5 Bass, 93 Pout, 29 Smoothhound and 159 Top-Ups for a total match weight of 219lb 8ozs, 108.269kgms. The Top-Ups were represented by 46 Bass, 4 Black Bream, 19 Pout, 87 Smoothhound, 1 Thornback Ray and Weaver Fish. The undersized Smoothhound were all in the 30cm range and looked freshly pupped by their reddish colour, a fantastic sight for all those present. All Smoothhound's caught within the SPL are measured and released. The competition also produced a total cash payout of £915 in 17 cash awards taking the total up to £7,625 for the year and £143,817 after 135 matches. During that period 10,603 anglers had booked-in giving an 11 year average attendance of 78, the yearly average to date is 83. INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION Bracklesham is best fished 3 up and 2 down over high water but ISAC members like to finish no later than 1am because entrants travel from all over the south of England and Wales to compete within the SPL, usually getting home in the very early hours of the morning. So the tide was not perfect and that we believe reflected in the low count of sizeable Smoothhound. Nevertheless, three specimen fish were landed on the night and match winner PAUL 'SHAKEY' STEVENS from Worthing, an SPL sponsor from ULTRAMARINE UK had one from peg 13 in zone A of 12lb 14ozs at 107.2%, with another fish at 6lb 12ozs. Paul added a single Pout to his bag for a total match winning weight of 19lb 13oz 8dms, 9kgms. This was his second match victory of the season having won at Stokes Bay in February. Paul collected the top cash prize of £130 with the ISAC Round 7 Match Winners trophy and certificate. Runner-up in the match was MIKE TAYLOR from Southampton who won zone B from peg 25 with a total weight of 17lb 14oz 4dms, 8.115kgms. That total was represented by 2 Smoothhound, his best at 10lb 8ozs, and 7lb, with a sizeable Pout and 2 Top-Ups. Mike won the zones top cash prize of £100. The final podium place went fittingly to the rod of ANDY PARKHILL from Gosport. This was a great result for Andy who lost his half brother, best friend and ISAC member MARK DIBBENS a couple of weeks after our last match at Browndown. Mark died unexpectedly of a heart attack aged just 44. In Round 4 at Lee-on-the-Solent, Mark won his zone to finish 3rd overall. Mark's support will be greatly missed by all ISAC anglers. So Andy rightly dedicated his zone victory from peg 51 in zone C to his brother and in so doing landed the Heaviest Fish of the Match, a 15lb 12oz Smoothhound at 131.2%, with 2 Pout in a total bag weight of 16lb 3ozs winning the zones top cash prize of £115. The third specimen Smoothhound of 13lb 8ozs at 112.5% fell to the rod of DARREN STEVENS from Bristol in peg 15. LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP There was a change at the top of the Individual Championship table with former England Youth Team Champion DARREN BOND from Lancing taking over the lead on 29 points and 53lb 9oz 12dms, 24.316kgms in weight. Despite failing to land a fish in Round 1, Darren went on to record just 10 points in the next six matches and is on target to register the lowest ever total points score in this best 10 results from 12 Individual Championship. If his form remains this good, Darren could beat the record low of 16 points set by former World and SPL Individual Champion JOE ARCH from Cardiff in 2005. At Bracklesham Darren finished in 6th place overall, second in zone A from peg 3 with a Smoothhound of 5lb 4ozs, 2 Bass, his best at 3lb 1oz 8dms, 4 Pout and 3 Top-Ups for a total weight of 12lb 12dms, 5.464kgms. Second overall is ALAN GILBERT from Worthing on 45 points and 25lb 13oz 8dms, 11.722kgms in weight. ALLY HARVEY from Worthing moved up into third place on 45 points with a total weight of 17lb 2ozs, 7.767kgms. PAUL STEVENS match victory saw him leap from 13th into fourth place overall on 47 points and 39lb 12oz 8dms, 18.044kgms in weight.

ISAC SOUTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE - ROUND 6 ISAC hosted the 6th Round of the Southern Premier League on the first day of summer at Browndown Beach, Gosport overnight of Saturday 22nd June from 8pm until 1am. 84 pegs were laid out in three zones from the wire fence peg 1 around the point to Elmore Angling Club peg 84. High water was set at 1.58am over a modest 4.3m tide designed to finish the match well before the tide brought the heaviest weed to rods. Weather conditions were good throughout the match. The target species for June were Smoothhound with this venue known to produce good returns when conditions were right during the final two weeks of the month. They duly arrived for the benefit of the 75 anglers that booked in for the competition with 102 sizeable fish measured and released. In addition to that total 1 Bass, 1 Black Bream, 5 Dogfish, 5 Pout, 3 Silver Eel, 1 Sole and 59 Top-Ups were registered at the scales for a record Hampshire total weight of 490lb 5oz 4dms, 222.407kgms. The Top-Up total was represented by 13 Bass, 23 Black Bream, 3 Tub Gurnard, 1 Plaice, 2 Thornback Ray and 17 Smoothhound. The Heaviest Fish of the Match was a last cast 123cm Smoothhound for DAVE PADMORE from Portsmouth recorded at 17lb 6ozs establishing a new SPL record for the species. The match produced a total cash payout of £975 in 17 cash awards taking the total up to £6,710 for the year. INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION The Southern Premier League is widely acknowledged by the cream of all British sea anglers to be the top league in England. Former World and SPL Individual Champion JOE ARCH from Cardiff, Wales is one of those advocates and during Round 6 he proved yet again, how brilliant the fishing and sport can be within the SPL. From peg 27 in zone A placed just past the concrete mushroom Joe landed 7 Smoothhound, his best at 92cms for 7lb 8ozs, and 5 Top-Ups, for a new Hampshire record individual weight of 31lb 1oz, enough to win the Round 6 competition and ISAC Match Winners trophy and certificate with the top cash prize of £130. Runner-up in the match was DARREN BOND from Lancing who won zone B from peg 54 placed near the first shingle mound with a total weight of 28lb 4ozs. That total was represented by 6 Smoothhound, his best at 103cms for 10lb 4ozs, and 2 Top-Ups earning Darren the zones top cash prize of £100. The final podium place went to the rod of STEVE DEATHE from Southampton who won zone C from peg 82 placed near the end of the venue with a total weight of 23lb 3oz 12dms. That total was represented by a Bass of 42cms at 1lb 7oz 12dms and 4 Smoothhound, his best at 7lb 8ozs. Indeed the match was so good that you had to finish with a double figure weight in all zones to win a cash prize, a feat never achieved before in the history of the SPL even on Chesil. LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP At the halfway stage of the eleventh season two sea anglers had taken up the challenge to land the south's greatest prize, the Southern Premier League title. STEVE DEATHE from Southampton had tasted success in 1999 and leads again on 22 points and 37lb 8oz 8dms, 17.023kgms in weight. DARREN BOND from Lancing is second overall on 27 points and 41lb 9ozs, 18.852kgms in weight. ALAN SMITH from Worthing holds the final podium place on 36 points and 26lb, 11.793kgms in weight after six rounds. SEA ANGLER MAGAZINE - PENN SEA LEAGUE The top points on weight will be awarded to zone winners JOE ARCH, DARREN BOND and STEVE DEATHE. Bonus points would be awarded to DAVE PADMORE for landing the HFOTM.

The match took place on Saturday 8th March in a south westerly force 7, with driving horizontal rain throughout the 7pm until midnight match, fished in four zones from the first stone groyne at Highcliffe peg 1, back towards the sunken car park at Avon Beach peg 100. If you do please drive carefully, tiredness kills. In this our third qualifier of the year CHRIS SNOW, ALAN GILBERT and PETE HEGG will gain the top points on weight. STEVE DEATHE and DAVE LANE will gain bonus points for their zone victories whilst CHRIS SNOW will be granted bonus points for landing the HFOTM. ISAC SOUTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE - ROUND 1 ISAC opened the 2008 Southern Premier League at Weston Shore, Woolston, Southampton at 10am until 3pm over a 1.02pm 4.4m high tide on Saturday 12th January in calm sunny conditions, ideal for the traditional Flounder starting match. 109 entrants booked-in for the competition which was pegged in five zones from Rolling Mills jetty peg 110 back towards Netley Abbey peg 1. 60 entrants registered 84 Flounder and 2 Top-Ups, undersized fish granted 1 ounce by ISAC and returned, for a total match weight of 74lb 10ozs, 33.865kg. The Heaviest Fish of the Match was a Flounder of 2lb 4dms landed by LEE GATRELL from Portsmouth in zone A peg 1. A total of £1,415 was paid out on the day in 27 cash awards. INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION ISAC was worried prior to the match because fishing throughout December at Weston had not been good. A local boat fisherman had gill netted the harbour catching Flounder for pot bait at £1.50 a box. No thought for the RSA and local tackle shops from that idiot! In addition, the one resident seal had increased to three and they had been feasting on Flounder over Christmas!!! Our match saw a 30 Flounder reduction from the previous year over a better tide. Nevertheless, when you have so much talent on show fish will be caught and at our 129th open competition in our eleventh season ALAN SMITH from Worthing proved he was the top angler winning the match from peg 36 in zone B, placed just to the right of Weston Sailing Club. Alan landed 4 Flounder for a total match winning weight of 4lb 3ozs 1.906kg with his best fish bringing the scale down to a creditable 1lb 9oz 12dms.
